Father Frank Kurimsky PastorSister Carol Ann Papp, OSF PrincipalMrs. Barbara MatassaAdministrative AssistantBarb Matassa has worked at Saint Irenaeus School for over 30 years. She held the position of Secretary to the director of Religious Education for over 20 years, and has worked as the School Secretary for the past 11 years. She enjoys her job as a secretary and loves to see the students grow through the years. Mrs. Matassa has resided in Oakmont her whole life, where she raised 3 children. She is a proud grandmother of 10- 8 of whom currently attend Saint Irenaeus School. Although she has taught various grade levels in the past, she currently teaches the second grade students while preparing them for the special sacraments of Reconciliation and First Holy Communion. Corbett has been nominated for Who’s Who among American Teachers and the Golden Apple Award many times. She received the Parish Service Award in 2005. She loves to inspire her students every day and has many fond memories at St I’s School. She was even featured in the short story “Dominic, Mrs. Corbett, and Me,” published in the book, Watching a Miracle, by Eileen Colianni. Mrs. Corbett attended Highlands High School and Edinboro University. Her pastimes include spending time with friends, going to the gym, traveling, and challenging herself to do new things. She is very passionate about sports, especially her favorite teams, the Steelers, the Pirates, and the Pitt Panthers. Mrs. Corbett considers Saint Irenaeus her second home and makes it her goal to touch her students’ lives- one student at a time.Mrs. Samantha Lesak3rd Grade HomeroomMrs. Kelly Conroy4th and 5th Grade HomeroomMrs. Marcia DiGirolamoScience Teacher grades 4-8 * 6th and 7th grade homeroomMarcia DiGirolamo has taught at Saint Irenaeus School for 27 years, and loves her job. She holds a BS in Elementary Education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and has taken Post-Baccalaureate courses in Education at Carlow College, Gannon University, and Allegheny Intermediate Unit. She is a PRAXIS certified middle school science teacher who is enthusiastic about sharing her love of science with her students. Mrs. DiGirolamo was nominated for the Golden Apple Award in 2005.Ms. Victoria MillerMath Teacher grades 5-8 * 8th Grade HomeroomVictoria Miller is thrilled to be joining the Saint Irenaeus Community for the 2011-2012 school year. She holds a B.A. in Child Development and Education and a Mathematics minor from Washington and Jefferson College, where she also worked as a Peer Assisted Learning math tutor. She is currently working towards a M.Ed. in Mathematics at the University of Pittsburgh. She has PA State Teaching Certifications in elementary (k-6) and mathematics (7-12). Her previous jobs include working as a long-term substitute 4th grade teacher in the Mt. Lebanon School District, tutoring all levels of math students (including calculus), working as a Religious Ed. Teacher’s Aide at St. Basil Parish, and acting as an America Reads mentor for 2 years.Mr. Ken BaileyTechnology Coordinator * Computer Teacher grades K-8 * Reading/English Teacher grades 4-8 * Although Ken Bailey has taught pre-school through college level classes since 1982, he is a fairly recent addition to Saint Irenaeus School. Bailey has taught at Saint I’s School for three years, beginning in 2006, then completing the 2007-08 school year. He returned to the school for the 2010-2011 school year. He holds a BA in history and an MA in philosophy and enjoys sharing his passion for these subjects with his students. Mr. Bailey fondly remembers traveling throughout Mediterranean Europe with the US Navy and enjoys telling stories about his adventures, and his witty sense of humor makes him popular with faculty and students alike. In his spare time, Mr. Bailey enjoys stained glass design and restoring antique motorcycles. Mr. Bailey lives with wife, Lisa, and son, Sean.Mrs. “Maestra” Mary LoeraSpanish Teacher grades K-8Mary Loera, or Maestra to her students, has been teaching Spanish at Saint Irenaeus School for 13 years. She graduated from University of Pittsburgh with a double major in Spanish and English. In addition to teaching at St. I’s, she holds a position as a Spanish teacher at Saint Bartholomew’s School in Plum, where she introduced the Jr. High Spanish Program. While living in Tucson, Arizona, Mrs. Loera taught English to Mexican American Students. She delights in working with children of all ages and loves to see improvement in the children from year to year. Her hobbies include cooking Italian and Mexican food.Ms. Caitlyn BovardMusic Teacher K-8Caitlyn Bovard has been teaching music at Saint Irenaeus School since 2010. She recently received her Bachelor of Music degree in flute performance from Duquesne University. She adeptly leads her students through the world of music, including putting on a Christmas play/concert every year. In addition to teaching at Saint Irenaeus, she is also a substitute teacher for Pittsburgh Public Schools and she is a freelance flute performer and private flute instructor. STAFFMrs. Antonette WaxterEDP DirectorAntonette Waxter has worked at Saint Irenaeus School for 5 years. In addition, she is a Substitute Aide for the Riverview School District. Mrs. Waxter is a proud parent of 3 and adoring grandmother of 7. She notes that EDP has truly been an amazing addition to her life since she retired.Mr. Anthony Ricciuto (NO PICTURE)Band DirectorAnthony Ricciuto has been directing the Saint Irenaeus Band since 2003. Mrs. Waxter's EDP is an important asset to Saint Irenaeus School. The children really enjoy each other at the end of the day. EDP is a wonderful place to unwind and play ball, play games, talk amongst friends, watch movies, and more! Mrs. Waxter ensures that each childs homework is completed every day, and she is always present for assistance with a tough question. She offers an array of snacks every day, ranging from waffles to ice cream to fresh fruit and more. The children view her as a grandmother-like figure and constantly comment on how fast the time flies at EDP. Junior Achievement programs help prepare young people for the real world by showing them how to generate wealth and effectively manage it, how to create jobs which make their communities more robust, and how to apply entrepreneurial thinking to the workplace. Students put these lessons into action and learn the value of contributing to their communities. JAs unique approach allows volunteers from the community to deliver our curriculum while sharing their experiences with students. Embodying the heart of JA, our 382,637 classroom volunteers transform the key concepts of our lessons into a message that inspires and empowers students to believe in themselves, showing them they can make a difference in the world._____________________________________________________________Robotics ProgramInstructor: Mrs. Marcia DiGirolamo/Ms. Tina GaitherInfo: Mandatory, During School Program for 6th-8th GradersIn this hands on program for 6th to 8th graders, Mrs. DiGirolamo introduces her students to the world of robotics. Using LEGO Mindstorms robots and a program from CMU, students build and program their own robots. They are given a set of tasks to complete, and at the end of the year, a competition is held. The goal is to efficiently program the robot to perform each task. The winner is given a prize by Engineer Tina Gaither. Mrs. DiGirolamo and Ms. Gaither have appeared on radio talk shows where they discuss the program and its success. Each student is given a T-Shirt for participating._____________________________________________________________GreenWave Basketball Instructor: TBACoached by parents of St. Is Students, the school is fortunate to have basketball teams for girls and boys in grades 3 and up. The teams play in the diocesan league. For more information, visit www.st-i.org_____________________________________________________________Fitness ClubInstructor: Lisa GiannettaInfo: Optional, After School Program for grades 4-8Led by Lisa Giannetta, mother of 3 St Is students, the fitness club, which begins in early spring, presents students with a challenge to improve their overall fitness with the end goal of participating in a race such as the Pittsburgh Kids Marathon or the Twin Boro 5K Run/Walk. Once a week, the children participate in fun exercise stations that will build their physical stamina and strength. The children also run a mile each time with the goal of shortening their times every week. At the end of the school year, Mrs. Giannetta holds an awards ceremony for the students, rewarding them for their hard work and dedication. Children are also given a T-Shirt commemorating their participation in fitness club._____________________________________________________________Kids of STEELInstructor: Ms. Victoria Miller (8th Grade Teacher), Rhian Kenny, Lisa GianettaInfo: Optional, After School Progarm for kids K-8Saint Irenaeus is proud to participate in this fun new program. Kids of STEEL was designed to combat obesity and to promote physical activity in youth. The program focuses on exercise, nutrition, and healthy lifestyle choices. Meeting directly after school on Tuesdays and Fridays, students will have 18 weeks to complete 26.2 miles, with their final mile being the Toyota of Pittsburgh Kids Marathon. Kids will also be encouraged to make healthier food choices by tasting new foods and sharing them with their families. STEEL Taste and STEEL Run is an exciting new addition for Saint Irenaeus! STARBASE is a national program, funded and supported by the Department Of Defense (DoD) and implemented by the military branches. Starbase Atlantis is run by the U.S. Navy. STARBASE offers a positive, proven approach to engendering excitement and interest towards math, science and technology skills. This program is available to 5th graders only. Students are encouraged to reach conclusions on their own and are given opportunities to apply the scientific principles they learn to both real and imagined scenarios. Classes are designed to stimulate a multi-sensory learning experience, prompted by carefully presented questions from the instructor (audio), detailed lab manuals (visual), and first-hand experimentation (tactile).
